How the dataset is built.
CADSI is the anchor (about 900 members). AIAC, Aero Montréal, ACADA, OAC, Pacific NWDSC, CDR and the DND IDEaS portfolio each add firms the others miss. We never use Wikipedia or news articles as primary sources.
For each company we fetch the official site and extract email, phone, address, description and a foreign-ownership flag. Email priority: a real mailbox from the site beats a generic info@ address.
Canadian HQ only. Canadian subsidiaries of foreign primes (Lockheed Canada, Raytheon Canada, BAE Canada, L3Harris MAS, GD Land Systems Canada) are excluded. Textile soft goods are out; ballistic, optics and electronics-bearing hardware are in. Dual-use firms in cyber, AI, marine and simulation are included only when the company itself says it serves DND, CAF, the military or NATO.
Names normalise for dedup (the original spelling stays in the CSV). Addresses geocode through a cached pipeline with retry. Every change to companies.csv goes into an append-only history file, so any row can be replayed back in time.
Each source has a status (fresh, due, stale, dead) and a next-check date. A weekly orchestrator plans what to re-fetch, prunes dead sites and rebuilds the map. The map you see updates automatically when the underlying CSV changes.
